I think it is important to constantly improve yourself. Whether that is reading more, eating less sugar, maybe drink fewer beers or anything that can optimize my day.
So I wanted to try something new. Will I give up ice cream? No. How about give up drinking? Nah.
How will I look more attractive, gain energy, and maybe gain back some sanity? Cold showers.
I was doing a little research on things you can add to your routine that can improve your body and mind. I stumbled across cold showers. The benefits of a cold shower are pretty interesting and no we are not referring to taking a “cold shower” when things get steamy. Taking a cold shower can do some serious stuff to the body.
Cold Shower Benefits
Turn the shower on so its ice cold and jump right in. A study was conducted in 1994 showing the immediate impact of cold water can help promote hardening, increasing tolerance to stress, and even disease. The study found a drastic decrease in uric acid levels during and following exposure to a cold stimulus. Ya- those are fancy words. Long story short, the cold temperature hitting your body without a chance to adapt slowly, can give some major benefits to reducing stress. Don’t believe me? Dude its science! Checkout the study here
Helps with Depression: So studies have shown that cold showers can relieve depression symptoms due to the intense impact of the cold water hitting your skin. The cold receptors in the skin send a crazy amount of electrical impulses from the peripheral nerve endings to the brain. This has an anti-depressive effect and gives you a great mental pick up. “A 2008 study found that cold hydrotherapy has an analgesic effect, and does not appear to have noticeable side effects or cause dependence.”. Yes, we get it, this sentence contains scientific vocabulary which makes no sense. Basically, you should read this study conducted. Long story short, cold showers can help with your mood!
Helps with Heart Health
The immediate shock from the cold temperatures can help your heart. Basically, the cold temperature helps your arteries pump blood more efficiently which is great for the heart. Some studies believe a cold shower can help unclog your arteries. Not sure how many cold showers it would take, but I would assume a big mac and fries cannot be part of the diet when attempting to unclog. Sorry.
Leave the cocoa butter at home ladies, a cold shower will clean that skin right up! Lukewarm showers can remove all the natural oils the skin needs to be healthy, cold showers do not. Cold water also tightens the skin and seals your pores, which can prevent dirt from getting in those pores. The tightening of the skin is temporary.
They say the best things in life are free. Cold showers cost a heck of a lot less than a skin moisturizing cream that also reduces stress and strengthens your heart (FYI, this product does not exist yet. We are working on a formula).
Lastly, does a cold shower help burn fat? Yes, but the amount of fat burned during a cold shower is minimal. You would have to take a lot of cold showers to make this practice effectively for minimal fat burning. Brown fat is the key target. White fat uses calories to generate energy, brown fat uses calories to generate heat. The theory of cold showers burning brown fat is based on your body using brown fat to generate warmth due to the significant drop in your bodies temperature.
This is true, but a study was conducted showing a cold shower burns an extra 76 calories a day. Sound like a lot? A pound of fat contains approximately 3,500 calories. Maybe if you sat in a cold shower all day you could burn a few pounds. I recommended going for a walk instead.
Cold showers have great benefits for skin, heart, and brain. They have little help when it comes to burning fat.
Now go enjoy that cold shower you filthy animal.
